Malawi to host 2025 Africa Netball

Malawi has been chosen to host the 2025 edition of the Africa Netball Championship.

The decision was made during Africa Netball annual general meeting held on the sidelines of this year’s tournament in Swakopmund, Namibia.

On their preparedness to host the continental event, Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) general secretary Yamikani Kauma said they are not anticipating significant challenges.

She said: “We have been chosen because they gave us a wooden floor which is required to host such tournaments.

“We also took it as an opportunity because it has been a long time since we hosted the tournament and it will help bring forex.”

On resources, Kauma said teams cater for their own expenses such as food and accommodation.

“So, if anything, we’ll only spend on organisation which shouldn’t be much. After all, as hosts, we won’t spend on travel,” she said.

But Malawi National Council of Sports chief executive officer Henry Kamata said NAM is yet to brief them on the development.

In an interview yesterday, he said: “We are yet to receive a report from NAM on the recent Africa Netball Championship.

“If Malawi is to host such a high level championship, we need to understand from NAM the budgetary implications and other determinants for hosting such a competition.”

On whether the Griffin Saenda Indoor Sports Complex would have been completed at the time of hosting the tournament in December, Ministry of Youth and Sports spokesperson Macmillan Mwale said it would be difficult to commit in the absence of communication from NAM.

The last time Malawi hosted the tournament was in 2013 at Blantyre Youth Centre.
