Malawi U-23 Netball Team gets 2nd straight victory

The Malawi Under-23 National Netball Team on Sunday secured a second-successive win in Power Week one of South Africa’s Telkom Netball League following a 72-38 thumping of Baobabs.

In a match monitored on SuperSport, the Malawi Queens Cubs put up a dominant display in all quarters. They led 18-7 in the first quarter before taking their tally to 34-18 and 59-25 in the subsequent segments heading to a 34-basket victory.

The latest result came three days after they also beat the league’s defending champions KD Queens 53-44 in their opening match.

On Sunday, lofty shooter Aida Mhone was the mastermind of the Cubs’ resounding victory as she rarely missed the target under the loop. It was no surprise, therefore, that she was named player of the match.

“It is satisfying to win the player of the match accolade in this tough competition. This motivates me to put more effort in the next games. However, the most important thing is that I have helped my team to win this game,” she said.

The Malawi Under-23 National Netball Team coach Joana Kachilika praised her charges for the emphatic win, describing it as a huge confidence booster ahead of their next outing.

“I am very much impressed with the performance of the girls. They are playing as a team and they always follow instructions. However, this should not put us into the comfort zone. We still have to fight for more glory,” she said.

In their next fixtures, Malawi will face Tornados today, Sonoblomo tomorrow, Sunbirds on Wednesday, Diamonds on Thursday, Tshukubu on May 1 and Lilies on May 2.
