Malawi Under-17 clobbered at Cosafa

Malawi Under-17 national football team’s nightmare raged yesterday at the Cosafa Championship with yet another embarrassing 7-1 massacre by Angola in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

The result means Malawi is out of the race for the championship as well as qualification for the 2021 Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) final tournament.

Msakakuona: We will just try to win the last match

Hosts, South Africa joined Zambia for the 2021 Morocco Under-17 Afcon finals despite going down 1-0 to the defending champions.

The two sides also clash in Cosafa final while Malawi and Angola meet again in a ceremonial third-place play off on Sunday.

Following South Africa’s 1-0 loss to Zambia, Malawi only had to beat Angola with more goals to punch a ticket to the final and Under-17 Afcon.

But the opposite happened as the junior Flames did what they have been good at throughout the tournament—leaking goals like nobody’s business.

Just like in the match against Zambia, the team had already conceded three goals at half time before letting in four more in the last half

Angola scored though Vincente Domingos, Custodio Hequele, Alexandre Cacuo, Osvaldo Inga and Armindo Canji’s hat-trick while Chifundo Mphasi scored Malawi’s consolation.

The team goes into Sunday’s third place play off against Angola yet to win a match at the tournament having drawn 2-2 against South Africa and lost 6-2 to Zambia.

The junior Flames have leaked in 17 goals and managed just five.

For the first time since 2011, the team risks coming back home without a win if things go wrong again against Angola.

This time coach DeKlerk Msakakuona admitted that something was terribly wrong with his team.

He said: “We will just try to win the last match to earn some respect.”
