Malawi win gold in netball at Saussa Games

Team Malawi on Friday won gold in netball at the Southern African Universities Staff Sports Association (Saussa) Games in Harare, Zimbabwe after beating Zimbabwe’s African University 38-29 in the final.

However, the darts team won silver after losing the final 4-3 to University of Zimbabwe.

Team Malawi netball captain Jane Gowa said: “We are overjoyed with this victory, which is a result of teamwork and determination.”

Public Universities Staff Sports Association of Malawi (Pussam) spokesperson Emma Abraham Mbilizi applauded the team for making Malawi proud.

“We are super excited that we are the Saussa games 23rd netball champions. It was a tough game, but we made it through. It was so tight to the point that we tied 10-10 in the first quarter but the ladies put more effort,” she said.

“Many thanks to Pussam management, the Malawian supporters in Harare and, of course, special thanks to the lady netball players for making Malawi proud.”

To reach the finals, the netball team beat Namibia University of Science and Technology 28-27 in the semi-finals while the darts team triumphed 4-3 over Zimbabwe

The Saussa Games comprised various sports disciplines, including netball, football, pool, darts, tug of war, volleyball, lawn tennis and table tennis.
