Malawian duo misses Mazembe victory
Malawian duo of Patrick Mwaungulu and Lanjesi Nkhoma did not get a run when their Democratic Republic of Congo outfit TP Mazembe beat Red Arrows of Zambia 2-0 on Saturday in the second round of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League.
Both players flew straight to Ndola in Zambia from Mali where they were on national duty with the Flames for the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier against Burkina Faso, but were not part of Mazembe coach Lamine Ndiaye’s 21-man squad for the Arrows match.
Felix Ngamanya Sapao, who facilitated the two players’ move on behalf of Mazembe, said they were both registered for the CAF Champions League.
“But I cannot speak on behalf of the club, they have their own administrative and technical structures,” he said.
The club’s spokesperson Glantis Nyota could not be reached for comment yesterday.
To qualify for the second round, Arrows booted out Mwaungulu and Nkhoma’s former team FCB Nyasa Bullets 3-2 on aggregate.
Both players signed two-year deals with Mazembe after being signed for K70 million each.
