Ministry of Health (MoH) has targeted 60 000 males aged between 15 and 45 in the forthcoming national voluntary male circumcision campaign slated from July 22 to August 22.

According to the Lilongwe district health officer, Mwawi Mwale, the campaign targets young people of the reproductive age groups as one way of reducing the chances of contracting HIV.

He said those under the age of 15 are also welcome.

“Although the campaign is targeting a special age group, it does not mean that young boys cannot come and undergo the procedure. Even those in the initiation ceremonies are welcome during this campaign,” he said.

The campaign will be conducted in districts of Phalombe, Mulanje, Thyolo, Blantyre and Lilongwe.

MoH is conducting the campaign in conjunction with I-Tech and it is being funded by CDC and USaid.

The first national male circumcision campaign took place in Mulanje in 2011.
