Controversy over Presidential Cup prize money

Listen to this article

Three weeks after the completion of the Presidential Football Cup, it has emerged that teams are yet to receive their prizes to the tune of K16 million (US$46 376).

The development comes amid reports that government diverted the money towards hosting the Independence Anniversary Celebrations international friendly match between Malawi and Mozambique.

While confirming that teams are yet to receive their prizes, Sports Council executive secretary George Jana dismissed the claims that the money was diverted to the July 6 international match.

He, however, admitted that the float for the tournament had to be used for other requirements.

Jana also said according to the rules, they are within the stipulated period of giving out the prize money.

“They [clubs] should check the rules of the competition, which clearly stipulate that they are supposed to be given within 30 days after the final match and, therefore, they have no basis to raise an alarm,” said Jana.

Silver general secretary Mike Tembo and chairperson McDonald Mafuta-Mwale confirmed the development, saying the delay is affecting operations of the club and they have since taken up the issue with the relevant authorities.

The Presidential showpiece is sponsored by government and is run on its behalf by the Football Association of Malawi (FAM).
