Smallholder farmers in traditional authorities (T/As) Chimwala and Chilipa in Mangochi District were on Monday drilled in how to control fall armyworms.

Malawi Lake Basin Programme (MLBP) under the Emergency Fall Armyworm Management Project conducted the training.
In an interview, MLBP natural resources management officer Kelvin Guta said the training sought to educate farmers on the correct use of pesticides and other natural control methods.
Figures from Mangochi Agriculture Extension Planning Office show that fall armyworms have affected 4 000 hectares, which roughly translates into 8 000 farming families expected to have food deficit.
One farmer, Janet Adini of T/A Chimwala thanked MLBP for the training. n
