Barely a month after the successful hosting of the 2013 All Africa Pool Association (AAPA) Championship, Malawi Pool Association (Mapa) president Francis Zhuwao has resigned.

According to a press statement from Mapa signed by its general secretary Saulos Thindwa, Zhuwao has resigned due to office commitments.

Zhuwao confirmed to The Nation his resignation in a brief telephone interview from Lilongwe.

According to Thindwa, in his communication before the international tournament, Zhuwao noted that he was failing to perform his duties effectively as Mapa president due to pressure at his work place.

“He, therefore, felt that he was not being fruitful to the association as he was absent most of the times when Mapa needed him,” reads part of the statement.

Thindwa further said, according to Mapa constitution, the vice-president Chikondi Mbewe automatically assumes the presidency with immediate effect.

“Mapa is very grateful to Mr. Zhuwao for the support he has rendered during the past two years which he has been at the helm of the association,” further reads the statement

Zhuwao, who is popularly known as ‘Zhux’ among the pool fraternity, was elected president in 2011 in Lilongwe following elections conducted by Malawi National Council of Sports.
