MBC, Chinese Embassy pen  broadcasting agreement

Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) and the Chinese Embassy have signed a broadcasting agreement aimed at strengthening cultural exchange and bilateral relations between the two nations.

Through the agreement, MBC will air various Chinese programmes, including coverage of upcoming Chinese festivals, giving Malawians an opportunity to learn more about Chinese culture and development.

Speaking during the signing ceremony in Lilongwe, Chinese Ambassador to Malawi Lu Xu said this will enhance awareness and understanding of the longstanding relationship between the two countries.

“Citizens from both nations need to appreciate the partnership in order to fully benefit from the opportunities arising from the cooperation,” Lu Xu said.

Lu added that broadcasting Chinese content will help strengthen people-to-people ties while promoting appreciation of cooperation in areas such as trade and cultural exchange.

She cited the One China Policy as one of the pillars of the relationship, noting that China has introduced measures such as zero-tariff access for African products into the Chinese market.

On his part, MBC Director General Brian Banda welcomed the agreement, describing the programmes as educational and beneficial to Malawians.

“These programmes are more than just content because they are educational in nature and will benefit many Malawians,” said Banda.
