MBC should serve Malawians better—Chinese envoy
The Chinese Ambassador Shi Ting Wang has urged State broadcaster Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) to consider “expanding its horizon so as to serve Malawians better.”
Wang, who winds up his tour of duty this month, said the broadcaster is key in enhancing the bilateral relations between Malawi and China further by becoming more relevant to the modern demands of broadcasting.
“As a major media house, I wish MBC continue to play its important role for the better understanding between the peoples of our two countries. For instance, Chinese people and the world over can come to rely on MBC to learn more about Malawi, thereby even promoting the country’s tourism sector,” he said.
The Chinese envoy was speaking in Lilongwe on Tuesday when he officially handed over rehabilitation works for MBC studios in Area 4, which his embassy financed to the tune of K25 million.
The new structure will enable MBC departments in Lilongwe to be housed under one roof; a development Minister of Information and Communication Technology Nicholas Dausi said would not only be cost-effective but also a motivating factor on the part of staff members.
He said: “It’s no secret that Malawi has been transformed because of its relations with China and the latter has now become one of the largest investors in the country, bringing tens of thousands of job opportunities to Malawians.”
MBC director general Aubrey Sumbuleta has since urged staff to uphold professionalism in discharging their duties and take good care of equipment.
