Mchinji loses 2 chiefs
Mchinji District Council has announced the death of Senior Chief Mkanda and Traditional Authority (T/A) Nyoka.
Mkanda died on Friday evening while Nyoka passed away on Saturday morning—both at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe.
In an interview on Saturday, Ministry of Local Government spokesperson Anjoya Mwanza said Senior Chief MKanda died after battling diabetes while Nyoka succumbed to high blood pressure.
“I can confirm that Senior Chief Mkanda died on Friday evening and T/A Nyoka died on Saturday morning. Burial arrangements for the deceased chiefs will be announced later,” she said.
Mchinji District Council chairperson Denis Lazaro said the death of the two chiefs was a big blow to the council.
“Senior Chief Mkanda was the longest serving chief in Mchinji. The two chiefs were instrumental in the development of the district,” he said.
Born on April 12 1930, Senior Chief Mkanda, real name Ackim Tumizani Phiri, was installed T/A Mkanda in 2000. He was elevated to Senior Chief in 2014. He is survived by a wife and five children.
The late T/A Nyoka, real name Josiah Solomon Thole, was born in 1943 and was installed Sub-T/A Nyoka in 2012. He was elevated to T/A in 2015. He is survived by a wife and 10 children.
