MCP-Aford alliance talk lands Kamlepo in hot soup
Opposition Alliance for Democracy (Aford) has given Rumphi East legislator Kamlepo Kalua seven days to publicly apologise for alleging that Aford received K5 billion to seal an alliance deal with governing Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
Aford publicity secretary Annie Amatullah Maluwa, in a letter to Kalua dated June 7 2025, described Kalua’s claims as baseless and malicious.

She challenged Kalua, a member of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), to produce evidence of the alleged K5 billion transaction and the alliance agreement made.
Reads the letter in part: “Your utterances are a clear attempt to undermine the credibility and trust that our party has built over the years. We take great exception to these allegations and demand that you take immediate action to rectify the situation.”
Yesterday, Kalua said the issue had already been sorted out.
But in a separate interview, Maluwa said Aford indicated that the matter was far from being resolved.
She said Aford was yet to receive any communication from Kalua, and that the ultimatum still stands adding that as of yesterday, Kalua had five days to make the apology.
Maluwa said Aford’s stand remains that if it will go into an alliance, it will be with other opposition parties and not MCP.
In an audio clip circulating on social media, Kalua is alleged to be the voice purporting that Aford and United Democratic Front (UDF) signed agreements for an alliance with MCP in the September 16 General Election.
Aford earlier indicated that it was in talks with DPP, UTM Party and UDF for possible alliances, but the parties have not provided an update on the status of the talks.
In the court-sanctioned fresh presidential election in 2020, Aford was part of the then nine-political party Tonse Alliance which took over government.
