Fourteen Units of the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) have gathered at Kamuzu Barracks Gallery Range to compete in the 2013 annual shooting competition.

The tournament, which was officially opened by deputy MDF commander (operations and training)) Lt John Msonthi, started yesterday and will end on Friday.

Msonthi said apart from being a core aspect of military training, shooting is also regarded as a sport.

“Previously, there was a Rifle Association of Malawi (RAM) which used to hold its own competitions of shooting as a sport, but it folded. It is, however, gratifying to note that our government has been able to provide an enabling environment for the MDF to stage this event this year,” said Msonthi.

According to the Directorate of Training (DOT) within MDF, who have organised this event, government has pumped in K4 million into the event which has brought together 450 officers and soldiers.

Msonthi warned participants to observe safety.
