MDF, State House budgets under scrutiny

Listen to this article

Lilongwe North West legislator Mphatso Boti has asked Parliament to come up with what constitutes serious or mere security matters when members are scrutinising defence budgets.

The issue arose during debate of the 2023/24 Mid-Year Budget Review which has already received support from the members during general debate.

Boti wondered why the National Assembly continues to deliberate and pass defence budgets when members do not receive feedback on how the funds were used.

He said: “Honourable Minister, we need to create a distinction between what is serious security matter and just mere security because sometimes this creates room for looting of State funds.”

However, Minister of Trade and Industry Sosten Gwengwe assured the House that MDF and State House budgets are under the Integrated Financial Management Information System so no looting of funds can take place.
