Temwa spices up golden boot with hat-trick
China-based women’s football star Temwa Chawinga sealed her Chinese Women’s top-flight league golden boot award with a hat-trick for her club Wuhan Jiangda FC in their 5-1 win over Zhejiang on Saturday.
It was a perfect tonic to a wonderful season for the Scorchers forward, who won almost everything on offer at both club and national team level.
Wuhan had the luxury of going into their final match having already clinched the title and Temwa took it as an opportunity to further widen the gap to 14 goals with the second top scorer Barbara Banda of Zambia, who plays for runners-up Shanghai.
She netted in the 50th, 52nd and 79th minute to take her tally to 30 goals while Banda did not feature for Shanghai, who edged Suchan 1-0 as she was with the Zambia Women’s National Team for the 2024 Olympic qualifiers.
In an interview yesterday, Temwa said she is excited to complete her contract on a high.
She said: “I have been with Wuhan for four years and we have won almost everything that was on offer.
“We have won the league four consecutive times, the FA Cup twice and the Women’s National Cup twice as well.
“Individually, I have also won a number of golden boots, including twice in the league and three times in cup competitions. It has been an amazing journey and I can only thank God for His blessings.”
On her future, the 25-year-old said she is talking to her manager.
“The talks are ongoing and we should determine the way forward in the next couple of weeks,” she said.
Wuhan won the Chinese Women’s Super League with 61 points from 22 games, they only dropped four points throughout the campaign.
Temwa also guided the Scorchers to win the 2023 Cosafa Women’s Championship in Johannesburg, South Africa where she was also named Player of the Tournament and won the golden boot with nine goals.
National Women’s Football Association president Adelaide Migogo said they are proud of the player’s achievements.
She said: “Temwa has flown the country’s flag high and has made the country proud.
“She has proven that she is among the best in the world.”
