The Wella Medical Aid Society of Malawi (Wemas) last week hosted a breakfast event at Sunbird Mount Soche in Blantyre to thank its customers and discuss updates.

Wemas chief executive officer Macdonald Wella said the company has experienced growth and success despite economic challenges.

Wella: We have trebled our business during the year

He said: “As the fastest growing medical insurance company in the country, we have trebled our business during the year. This has been achieved because of our hardworking team and the support we got from the industry.

“We have managed to attract many customers from competitors and those without a medical scheme.”

Wella also noted that insurance companies in the country need to do more to increase insurance penetration as people are unaware of the benefits of insurance.

“The knowledge levels of insurance are the ones which reflect in the numbers of people who are buying insurance products. Most people think they have to be sponsored by company and we are working hard to change this mindset by talking to them that they can join us on their own,” he said.

On his part, Development Aid from People to People human resource manager for, Elijah Jumbo, reported positive feedback from Dapp staff who are insured with Wemas.

“Our members of staff are able to access medical services at various hospitals and clinics throughout the country,” he said.
