Men urged to attend adult literacy classes in Kasungu
Build-On Organisation has urged men in Traditional Authority Njobwa in Kasungu District to patronise adult literacy classes.
The organisation’s deputy country director Atusaye Mwafuliwa said this on Wednesday during graduation of 35 people who completed adult literacy lessons in the area.
However, he bemoaned little interest among men in attending the lessons.
Mwafuliwa said out of 35 adults who completed the lessons, four were men.
He said most men feel shy to enrol for the classes.
“Most men do not enrol for the classes out of shyness. But when you know how to read and write you become more productive in society. How can you run a business when you do not know how to add and subtract, even read and write?” said Mwafuliwa.
He also said during the two years of learning, people are also engaged in other initiatives to complement their learning programme.
“They are taught how to make manure, participate in village savings and loans and rearing goats,” he said.
Senior Chief Njobwa commended Build-On for uplifting people’s lives through adult literacy education and building school blocks in the area.
Judith Sadya, one of the adult learners, said she was now able to write and read.
“I was failing to handle my phone [even to read] messages,” she said.
The organisation has reached out to 578 people with adult literacy education and built 500 classroom blocks in Kasungu since 1997
