Mepa launches strategic plan
Malawi Environment Protection Authority (Mepa) has launched a five-year strategic plan covering 2023 to 2028 with a focus on environmental stewardship, professionalism, integrity, innovativeness and teamwork.
Speaking during the launch in Lilongwe yesterday, Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change Michael Usi urged Mepa to be strict and neutral when discharging its duties and not tolerate political intrusion.
“As the minister responsible, I want to encourage you to be strict and remain focused. Don’t allow politicians to spoil your work,” he said.
Usi stressed the need to popularise Mepa’s functions and mandates so that people understand and follow when it makes decisions such as conflict resolutions.
Mepa board chairperson Robert Kafakoma said the pillars outlined in the strategic plan are aligned to the functions and mandates of the authority to guide its operations.
“We are geared to discharge our duties and I’m very happy that the minister is fully behind us so we should have no excuse for any failure,” he said.
Mepa’s key mandate is to protect the environment and coordinate lead agencies in the environmental protection sector in Malawi.
