Minister of Homeland Security Jean Sendeza and Deputy Minister of Defence Harry Mkandawire have commended security agencies in Chitipa for working tirelessly in ensuring peace and order prevail in the border district.

They expressed the sentiments on Friday during a tour of the district where Sendeza met police officers at Chitipa Boma while Mkandawire met Malawi Defence Force soldiers at Meru Military Camp which is expected to be upgraded to a garrison.

Sendeza commended police officers for reducing crime in 2021, saying that it was what her ministry was striving at.

“It is pleasing to note that despite working with limited resources, you are able to reduce crime. That is not a mean achievement. I commend you for this,” she said.

Sendeza said government was aware of the challenges officers are facing.

“I assure you that we are doing all we can to improve the situation,’’ she said.

Chitipa Police Station officer-in-charge Almakio Daka said the district registered 427 crimes in 2021 compared to 541 cases in 2020.

He attributed the decline to the involvement of community policing structures and the cordial relationship between the police and community members.

After the assignments, Sendeza and Mkandawire met with Malawi Congress Party followers at Chitipa Boma where the two encouraged party’s followers to continue supporting government
