Ministry says mindset change crucial for development

Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development chief civic education officer Kondwani Chitosi has underscored the importance of mindset change in helping government achieve its long-term development plan Malawi 2063 (MW2063).

He said this on Saturday during the training of members of the newly established Civic Education Hub in Traditional Authority (T/A) Mabilabo in Mzimba District.

He said the training aligns with MW2063’s mindset change pillar, noting that transforming attitudes takes time but is essential for development.

“We want people to interact with government and stakeholders, identify challenges and collaborate on solutions. This training is part of an ongoing effort to restore platforms such as Pabwalo, where communities can openly discuss development issues,” said Chitosi.

Group village head Beneka Jere commended the training, saying it was a significant step towards building an informed and proactive community.

“Development begins with mindset change. The members will influence positive thinking at community level,” he said.

Emfeni Area Development Committee chairperson Kondwani Longwe said the members will be responsible for disseminating information and promoting transparency and accountability.

M’mbelwa District Council youth officer Yamikani Nyalugwe said the training equipped local structures with tools to support development initiatives and encourage citizens to understand their roles.

“Mindset change is important and the training marks a long-term investment in community-driven development,” he said.

The training was facilitated by the Malawi Democratic Governance (Boma Lathu) programme with support from the European Union
