Missed opportunity for Malawi Handball

While the local handball family is expecting good news from Malawi Handball Association (Maha) general secretary Dennis Kumwenda’s Qatar trip for International Handball Federation (IHF) Congress last weekend, it has transpired that Kumwenda’s trip did not materialise.

According to one Maha executive member who asked for anonymity, the trip failed last Thursday because Maha could not raise enough money to cater for Kumwenda’s travel.

“Maha is cash-strapped and could not afford to pay for certain services such as visa processing. You can call the GS himself or the president to shed more light on what really happened,” said the source.

Maha president James Kamzati said he had no details about what made the GS fail to travel while Kumwenda himself could not pick up his mobile phone when called several times.

“I will come back to you later. I have not communicated with the GS for the past few days as I was busy at my workplace,” said Kamzati.

Last week, Kumwenda told The Nation he had been offered a return airticket and accommodation by IHF to attend the congress in Doha where Maha planned to lobby for at least two standard handball pitches and strengthen their relationship with other handball playing countries.
