Producer of the highly-sought-after film Fatsani, Gift ‘Sukez’ Sukali says fans will have to wait a little longer before the film comes on the local market.

In an interview, the producer said the processes they have taken the film through are legitimate and are followed all over the world.

Sukali: The online platform is the way to go now

“Firstly, you have to do premieres for the movie. Then we have to do cinema exhibitions, unfortunately here in Malawi we don’t have cinemas. Thirdly, we move to the stage of film-in-demand which involves pushing the movie through online platforms and that is what we are doing now,” he said.

Fatsani was listed on online movie streaming platform Showmax two weeks ago to become the first local production to feature on the site.

Sukali said it is important for Malawians to appreciate the idea of accessing films through online streaming sites.

He said: “People need to move with time and technology. The online platform is the way to go now.

“There is demand from us to produce more films, but if we don’t get anything from our productions, how are we going to fund our subsequent projects?”

The producer said they are yet to receive viewership statistics from Showmax to enable them to track how the film is faring. The statistics will be made available to the producers after 30 days.

The film was licensed to Showmax for three months exclusive and six months non-exclusive and Sukali said the agreement has earned them an impressive financial return though he couldn’t disclose the amount.

“From June, we are going into another agreement with Zambezi Magic. But since the deal was made on non-disclosure agreement, I won’t be able to divulge more information as of now,” he said.

MultiChoice Malawi corporate affairs manager Zena Makunje said Showmax is a platform which is high in demand and provides a wide viewership of content.

Fatsani being on Showmax means subscribers are able to access the film and its vast catalogue of content. It gives great exposure to content providers,” she said.
