Malawi President Joyce Banda says budget director Paul Mphwiyo, who was shot on 13 September has been discharged from a South African hospital.

Banda was speaking at a press briefing upon her arrival from the UN General Assembly, US on Wednesday.

She was reacting to reports that she visited Mphwiyo in hospital on Tuesday.

“I travelled one and half hours yesterday [Tuesday] to visit Eunice Kazembe, my minister… I did not visit Mphwiyo. But I am informed that  he is out of hospital,” said Banda.

Mphwiyo was shot 16 September as he drove into his Area 43 home in Lilongwe.

Mphwiyo’s colleagues at the Ministry of Finance and close family members told The Nation that the 37-year-old budget chief had confided in them that he was receiving phones threatening his life in connection with his tough public finance and economic management measures that that have closed pilfering loopholes at Capital Hill.

Following his shooting Malawi Police have made several arrest in connection with public funds looting.

  1. This Mphwiyo must face the full might of the law. A strong investigation must commence into his financial irregularities as Budget director. He is the Source of the whole Capital Hill Cashgate Scandal.
