Police raid net 78 in Blantyre

malawi-policeA joint sweeping operation by the Malawi Police Service (MPS) and Immigration Department in Blantyre last weekend rounded up 78 people, including illegal immigrants.

Southern Region Police Headquarters deputy spokesperson Beatrice Mikuwa said the sweeping exercise, with the help of intelligence officers in police, netted 12 illegal immigrants found with no work permits, but working in the country.

She said 64 Malawians were arrested for rogue and vagabond and were being held at Blantyre and Limbe Police stations.

Mikuwa said: “One person was arrested after he was found with counterfeit products, being cooking oil. Another was found with medical drugs suspected to have been stolen from government hospitals.”

The police said these people were arrested in Blantyre and Limbe towns and the surrounding townships.

She said some of the illegal immigrants entered in the country as visitors but overstayed while others had expired work permits.
