Mqocha netballers cry out for better officiation

Women’s netball in Mqocha, Mzimba is struggling with poor officiation, sparking disputes and frustration among players.
The issue came to light after Mtuzuzu Netball Club lost to Kamntchenja Netball Club in the K300,000 Kavimwembe Netball Trophy.

Mtuzuzu player Glory Nyasulu alleged that biased umpiring influenced the result.
“The umpire was biased and failed to trace faults, which affected the game’s outcome. We need the Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) to intervene,” Nyasulu said.

Nyasulu explained that biased officiation is threatening the integrity of the sport. She added that poor decisions have triggered disputes and frustration among players, discouraging young athletes.

She appealed to NAM to conduct an umpiring course in Mqocha to improve officiation standards.

NAM Technical Director Samuel Kanyenda responded:

“Let them put their concerns in writing so my committee can act.”
The Northern Region Netball Committee has also pledged to table the issue before NAM authorities.

For many girls in Mqocha, netball is more than just a sport. It provides a source of income through prize money and offers a positive alternative, keeping young women engaged and away from risky behaviours often associated with border districts.

With proper support and training, netball in Mqocha has the potential to thrive and create meaningful opportunities for young women.
