Gift Kafere and Tiwonge Ndungu were on Christmas Eve simultaneously crowned Mr and Miss Zomba respectively during a pageant held at the Gymkhana Club.

The colourful event was dominated by an overzealous youthful audience which in most occasions prompted the director of ceremonies Raymond Sekeni to appeal for sanity especially those closer to the panel of judges.

The winning contestants attributed to confidence and determination as their key to success. They paraded in categories such as casual, sports, traditional, office as well as dinner wear.

“I had self belief although it was my first time to take part in such an event. I will take a leading role in combating drug and alcohol abuses especially among the youth,” said Kafere.

On her part, the 20-year-old Ndungu said her role will be to lobby for girls to finish education, arguing early marriages among girls is becoming common.

“I will lead by example to inspire girls in education,” she said.

The show was spiced by performances from Blantyre-based artists such as Blakjak of the Wadya Iwe fame, The Elements dancing group, Kumbu and Phil J.
