Defending champions Mubas (Poly) Wildcats and Bricks will clash in the final of the Southern Zone Basketball League (Sozobal) men’s division.

Mubas beat Mikoko Mystics while Bricks overcame Crazy Warriors during the play-offs last weekend at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences Sports Complex in Blantyre.

Sozobal director of marketing and resource mobilisation Miranda Dula said Mubas and Bricks will face off at the same venue this weekend.

He said Sozobal arranged that top-four teams of the season in each of the league’s three divisions should be involved in the play-off battles to determine the finalists.

Mubas beat Mikoko 73-51 in the first match of the series before completing the rout with a 66-65 victory in the second fixture while Bricks beat Warriors 61-50 in the first match and 57-35 in the second game.

Mubas captain Timothy Banda and his Bricks counterpart Frank Phoya said they were happy to qualify for the final final.

Said Banda: “It is our wish to retain the title and we look forward to the final match.”

In Division Two, Firestorm and Poly Juniors tied 1-1 after winning a match each to attract a third encounter that is expected to break the tie this Saturday.

The same scenario occurred in the ladies’ division in which defending champions Kukoma Eagles and Kuhes Ganglions are set for a tie-breaking match.

Mikoko Ladies will take on Cobbe Barracks Ladies in the other play-off tie.

Dula said despite setbacks this season as a result of Covid-19, the competition has so far been successful, especially on style of play and revelation of new talent.

“It has been a good season with good team play and individual brilliance. We are even more delighted that for the first time in the ladies category, a college team Kuhes reached the playoffs stage,” she said.
