The day-long Bumas Rapid Chess Tournament will take place this Saturday at Multicountry near Museum in Blantyre, Southern Region Chess League (SRCL) has confirmed.

SRCL publicist Makhosi Nyirenda said the competition will be an exciting adventure. He, therefore, urged local chess fanatics to be part of the unique event.

“All players are welcome. They will be required to pay K1 000 (about $2.50) each to participate. The competition will comprise seven rounds.

“The winner will get K30 000 [about $75] while the runner-up and the third-placed players will receive K20 000 [about $25] and K15 000 [about $37.50] respectively. Fourth and fifth-positioned players earn K10 000 [about $25] and K5 000 [about $12.50] respectively. Those that will finish within the sixth and the 10th slots will each get K3 000 [about $7.50],” Nyirenda said.

Rapid chess games are a more casual form of the sport as compared to classical chess. In rapid chess, each player is given between 20 and 30 minutes to complete their moves.
