Muslim body donates chickens to chiefs

The At-Tariqatul Qadriah Sunni Association (AQSA) has donated 30 000 broiler chickens to 200 traditional leaders in Balaka to prevent them from engaging in corrupt practices.

AQSA senior inspector, Sheikh Fahad Zaidu Muhammad, said last Friday his organisation targeted chiefs because most of them do not have sustainable means of earning a living.

“Their lack of meaningful income generating activities forces them into corrupt practices to sustain themselves,” said Muhammad.

He expressed hope that the donation will transform lives of the beneficiary custodians of culture and traditions, thereby preventing them from soliciting gratifications from their people.

Muhammad indicated that the broilers were valued at K14 million and were sourced from Central Poultry in Lilongwe.

“We will soon extend the donation to vulnerable groups such as widows and orphans. We are currently discussing with our donors on the modalities,” he said.

Village head Mtumbwe said the chickens will significantly improve their income base.
