After seven years of trying his luck in Mount Mulanje Porters Race, Charles Musowa finally got it right today when he snatched the title from defending champion Evance Nyazule.

Meanwhile, Tereza Master maintained her top spot in the women’s category.

Upon crossing the finishing line, Nyazule thrilled spectators when he performed some jigs of celebration thinking he had defended the title, but he suddenly shrank and evaporated after learning he had completed the race almost two minutes behind the new champion.

Musowa dashed to the front line in two hours six minutes and 16 seconds to fall short of last year’s record of 2:05:04 while the record holder Nyazule stuttered to the second slot after 2:08:36. Leo Chikhwaza came third on 2:10:09.

“This is my time,” Musowa exclaimed before he received the K50 000 winners’ purse from guest of honour, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Youth and Sports Justin Saidi.

Master successfully defended the women’s trophy on 2:45:40 whereas Doris Fisher and Dorothy Gawani came second and third on 2:48:52 and 2:53:40 respectively

However, it was an extremely tough experience for the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) sole representative Francis Khanje who arrived at the scene over 40 minutes behind the winner to take the 16th position in the event that attracted about 200 athletes, including 25 foreigners.

Peter Bartlett was the best foreign athlete. He finished on number 60 after clocking 3:12:51.
