“Faith leaders are invited to lead these special prayers on any day of their choice from Friday, 6th February 2026, to Sunday, 8th February 2026,” she quoted the President as having said.

The President’s appeal comes as some districts have gone for over a week without rains.

Currently, 19 districts mostly in the Southern Region and parts of the Central Region are experiencing a dry spell expected to continue to this weekend.

Meanwhile, the Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) and the Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM) have welcomed the President’s call, describing it as timely.

MAM publicity secretary Sheikh Dinala Chabulika said believers should always seek God’s intervention when faced with challenges.

On his part, EAM general secretary the Reverend Francis Mkandawire said the association will appeal to its members to set aside Sunday services on February 8 2026 towards the prayer for rain and bumper harvest.

The dry spell has affected Chikwawa, Nsanje, Blantyre, Thyolo, Mwanza, Neno, Zomba, Phalombe, Mulanje, Balaka, Machinga, Mangochi, Salima, Dedza, Ntcheu, Lilongwe, Mchinji, Dowa and Ntchisi districts, according to the Department of Meteorological Services and Climate Change.
