My weight loss, my choice

One of Malawi’s top hip-hop gospel star Gwamba has found himself at the centre of social media talk after losing some weight. He has been a target of a lot of cyber-bullying on various platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. How is he managing to keep his focus on his career and new family amidst of all this talk? Where is his musical career going? Our reporter BRIAN ITAI talked with the now South Africa-based rapper on this and other issues. Excerpts:

Gwamba: It is my life and my choices

Q

: Congratulations on your getting married. How does it feel to be juggling marriage and a music career?

A

: Thank you! My wife is amazingly supportive when it comes to my music career. She shares my dream. And this has in turn made it very easy for me to juggle the two without any serious hassles. I am looking forward to more successful years of this double-edged partnership. It is a new day for us.

Q

: How are you progressing musically? We have just seen a new music video for Nthawi Zanji which you did with Fredokiss.

A

: You know me, I am always putting out music. It is what I love and what basically drives me. Soon, I will start working on my second gospel album. So far so great. The only challenge has been that one of my main producers DJ Sley was resident in Malawi but now he is coming here [South Africa] to work on my album.

Q

: Teaming up with your close friend Fredokiss for the first time on this project. How did it feel?

A

: He is such a great artist and I like working with people that make my art better. It was very right for us to come together and do that collaboration. The vibe and the energy within the two of us was so right. We needed to explore something new between us at the same time bringing out something unique to our fans. I am glad everything went well and the reception from our fans has been more than we had anticipated. I am sure we will do that again very soon.

Q

: You are mostly based in South Africa nowadays. Are you seeing any opportunities of penetrating into the South African music market?

A

: I am taking my time while keeping my eyes fixed on the ground. Of course in my next album I will feature some big artists from here. Everything has its own right time. Every day that passes I think it is taking me slowly towards my goals and dreams. It is the wish of almost every artist to make a breakthrough in such diverse and big market. If you ask me if I feel the time is now, I will have to tell you yes! The time is here and I am going for it.

Q

:Lately, there has been so much talk on the social media surrounding your weight loss. What do you make of this?

A

: I was expecting that question. Maybe we need to address this issue once and for all. In a country plagued with so many socio-economic problems such as electricity blackouts, poor water supply and shortage of employment opportunities and people think the most important thing is to talk about the weight loss of some 28-year-old. It is really baffling. I do not have to explain my choices to Malawians. It is my life and my choices.

There are so many people who are bitter. They grew up in spaces where love did not exist, all they saw was their parents fight. They have never experienced love at all. Now what they do is start creating fake Facebook and Twitter accounts and start picking on innocent people to feel better about themselves. And they have followers who enjoy their jibes and feel they have made it in life. So if I am going to be that sacrificial lamb to better their lives then they are welcome.

Q

: When should your fans expect new music from you?

A

: The fans who have supported my music are superstars. They have taken me this far. Without them I would not have been here. The least I can do is give them good more good music. So they should expect to hear from me any time. We are in this together, I can assure them.n
