Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) has nullified the contracts it offered to Peace Chawinga-Kalua and Mary Waya as Malawi Queens head coach and assistant coach respectively, but has resolved to hire them on temporary basis.

The decision was made at its executive committee meeting held on Tuesday evening in Blantyre following Malawi National Council of Sports’ (MNCS) order to review the recruitment process and follow the required procedures.

“I cannot say much because we are yet to brief Sports Council, but I can confirm that following Sports Council’s recommendation, we have put on hold our plans to offer them contracts

“However, in the interest of time, we will still proceed to engage the two though on temporary basis. It should be borne in mind that we do not have much time as the team is scheduled to go into camp in a few days’ time to prepare for the Diamonds Challenge which throws off later this month in South Africa. So, the normal recruitment exercise will be done at a later stage,” said NAM president Rosy Chinunda yesterday.

The development comes after Chawinga-Kalua and Waya accepted and signed the contracts that were offered by NAM.

However, Chawinga-Kalua yesterday said she was yet to be briefed about the development.

“I have not been told anything about the outcome of yesterday’s meeting. I signed the contract and submitted it to NAM last week, but I have learnt from the media that there are fresh developments. Maybe they will get in touch with us at an appropriate time to brief us.

“So, until I am communicated to by NAM, I am afraid it will be difficult for me to comment,” she said.

Sports Council executive secretary George Jana also said they were yet to be briefed on NAM’s resolutions.
