Nankhumwa criticises unrealistic election promises

People’s Development Party (PDP) president Kondwani Nankhumwa has condemned the growing trend among politicians of making unrealistic promises to the electorate ahead of the September 16 elections.

Speaking to area committee members at Nogwe and Kamwendo primary schools in Mulanje North Constituency, he emphasised that his party is committed to addressing the root causes of poverty that have plagued Malawians for years.

Nankhumwa engages grassroot

Nankhumwa, who was accompanied by some senior party executives, including national organising secretary Kettie Mkandawire, national director of women Claire Kachapira and national publicity secretary Rhodes Msonkho, among others, stated that PDP’s approach focuses on practical solutions, rather than empty promises.

He said: “There are some political leaders who are promising to end your challenges once you vote them into office. This doesn’t make sense. How can they promise to do something for you next year when people are suffering today?”

The Mulanje Central legislator further said his party plans to empower the electorate by providing opportunities to start small businesses, which will be financed by the party’s resources.

Nankhumwa disclosed that some members of the party from districts he has visited so far like Mchinji and Lilongwe have already started reaping from the party’s initiative.

Speaking at the same rally, group village head Dyanyama welcomed the PDP leader’s remarks, saying politicians should refrain from cheating the electorates.

Nankhumwa’s visit to Mulanje North was part of a series of meeting aimed at strengthening the party’s presence and commitment to addressing the needs of the people through real, achievable and solutions.

Apart from Mulanje, he will also visit Blantyre, Zomba, Mangochi and Monkey Bay.

Malawians will head to the polls on September 16 this year to elect a President, 229 members of Parliament and 509 ward councillors.
