National Bank of Malawi (NBM) on Sunday organised a sports festival at Moneymen Club in Blantyre, where the bank’s employees had unadulterated fun as they engaged in various sporting activities.

For once, directors, managers, tellers, clerks and security guards put aside their job titles to have fun together while competing in sporting codes such as football, netball, volleyball, chess, athletics and darts.

In individual sports, Oswin Kasunda took table tennis glory while Memory Alfonso won gold in darts. Joseph Kamponda emerged as master on the pool table whereas Paul Jiya came out the best in chess.

Martha Gomezulu and Ipyana Mwakanema won 100-metre races in ladies and men’s categories where as Nellie Kayitano and Harry Zimtambila did it in the respective sections in weightlifting.

In team sports, the sides were divided into colours such as black, white, blue and red. Reds won the football crown after beating Whites 2-1 in the finals. Blacks emerged as netball champions following 10-4 triumph over Reds whereas Blues outclassed Whites in volleyball.

According to NBM deputy chief executive officer Macfussy Kawawa, they organised the event for the first time in three years as part of the drive to nurture and foster team building  as an enabler for superior customer service delivery.

He added that it was also the best platform to update and thank their staff for successful integration cross over of Indebank and let them know there is more work to be done to make Indebank customers feel most welcome to a “bigger and better NBM family.”

“This was more than just a sporting festival. While keeping our bodies and minds in good shape,  we needed to sit down as National Bank family to discuss business matters,” Kawawa said.

“The Malawi economy is a challenging environment to do business. This impacts the bank’s performance and, as staff, we needed to have special time to discuss how to collectively work smarter and creatively.”

Chairperson for the event’s organising committee Webster Kaunga thanked the bank’s executive board for granting the staff such a wonderful moment. n
