Lilongwe District Council chairperson Sekelani Kansikili says the construction of a new classroom block at Nkhweza Primary School in Traditional Authority (T/A) Chimutu in the district will improve access to education in the area.
He made remarks on Friday during the handover of the K194 million school block and a latrine, constructed under the Regional Climate Resilience Programme (RCRP-2).
Kansikili said the provision of adequate classroom blocks was essential to improving the delivery of quality education, as it would help address challenges associated with overcrowding and inadequate learning spaces.
Kansikili said the new infrastructure will provide learners with a better environment to concentrate on their studies, thereby contributing to improved academic performance.
“Education is a key component of development and providing learners with adequate and safe classrooms is important for them to concentrate on their studies and perform well,” he said.
Kansikili commended the government and development partners for supporting the construction of education infrastructure in the district, saying such interventions were contributing to efforts to improve access to quality education.
He further urged the community to take ownership of the facility and ensure that it was properly maintained to benefit learners for many years.
Lilongwe Chiwamba Constituency legislator Winston Kaimapanjira warned community members against vandalising the facility.
He said: “The new school block will help address the shortage of classroom space and create a better learning environment for learners.
“Therefore, I appeal to the community to work together with school authorities and other stakeholders to safeguard the facility and ensure that it remains in good condition.”
Nkhweza Primary School suffered a shortage of classrooms for learners following the hailstorm that destroyed some classroom blocks.
The RCRP-2 is supporting communities with development interventions to strengthen resilience and improve access to essential social services, including education infrastructure.
