NGO brings safe water to community

Over 2 000 people from Masankhawa in Traditional Authority Tsabango in Lilongwe will be accessing safe water Children and Women Care organisation (Cawoco) sank a borehole in the area.

Masankhawa community is in the area of senior chief Tsabango in Lilongwe.

The non-governmental organisation sunk the borehole after learning that people were getting water from untreated sources.

Speaking during the handover ceremony on Thursday, Cawoco executive director Jean Suntche said the borehole cost about K2 million.

She said: “The funds for this project were provided to Cawoco by German friends who visited the country as volunteers and this is just the beginning of more projects in this area.”

Suntche also said they plan to construct an early childhood learning centre in the area where children will be accessing early childhood education.

After learning about the need in the area, youthful donors of the borehole project, Jonas Kagermeier and Joelle Naas, contacted the people back in Germany and raised the funds used to construct the borehole.

In an interview, Kagermeier told their families and friends about the plight of the people of Masankhawa and pleaded for their support.

He said: “Through the Internet, we fundraised from our friends and family members. There are around 40 people who helped to make this project a reality.”

Group village head Masankhawa said his subjects are now safe from waterborne diseases because of this new borehole.

He, therefore, said he and his subjects were looking forward to life of good hygiene.
