NGO-GCN engages parties to support women aspirants

NGO-Gender Coordination Network has appealed to delegates of political parties in Ntchisi District to support women during primary elections to ensure more of them contest in the September 16 General Election.

The organisation’s women in politics and decision-making thematic area chairperson Thandizo Mphwiyo said this on Tuesday in Ntchisi during a meeting with delegates of political parties.

She said: “Primary elections is a platform where delegates choose people to represent political parties on presidential, parliamentary or local government positions.

“The people that are responsible for electing these women aspirants are the delegates. So, we felt it is important to lobby for their support to elect women.”

Mphwiyo said it was important that delegates were oriented on the new plans on how primaries are conducted to be knowledgeable on how they are going to vote for their candidates.

She then asked political parties to create an enabling environment for women to thrive in their respective political parties.

Speaking during the meeting at Kwezani Primary School ground in Ntchisi Central East Constituency, one of the delegates Rose Chapita said they will ensure that they elect women in the primaries and the general election.

“We want to see more women in various political parties, as such, we will do the needful to see them succeed,” she said.

Chapita also encouraged male delegates to consider giving women aspirants a chance to represent their parties on the ballot in the September 16 General Election.

UN Women through The Malawi Electoral Support Project supported the meeting.
