Nice empowers Kasungu girls with computer skills

National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust has trained 23 girls in Kasungu District in computer literacy to equip them with digital skills.

Speaking during a graduation on Tuesday, Nice Kasungu district programmes officer Gerald Chirwa said girls and women have a crucial role in the country’s political and socioeconomic development.

He said: “We invite many girls and women to enrol for the next session because our objective is to ensure that many girls and women have relevant computer skills to help them fit in various environments.

“As we deepen the democratisation process, we need to take everyone on board, including women, girls and other disadvantaged groups and we believe that imparting computer skills to them is part of that process.”

Chirwa said in line with the organisation’s strategic plan, Nice Trust has developed strategies to improve the quality of civic education and strengthen the provision of community mobilisation.

“We want to reach many people, especially youths, women and girls. So, this training will also assist them in accessing information on governance, democracy and elections,” he said.

One of the trainees, Ruth Chimombo, encouraged women and girls to enrol in the course, describing it as a cheap alternative where the learners only pay  K5 000 per month.

She said: “We are in a digital world where everything demands computer skills. Elsewhere, the training demands a lot of fees but here it is almost free.

“We appeal that the initiative should spread to other districts.”

The three-month training focused on Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint and Internet.
