RA moves to rehabilitate damaged M1 section
Roads Authority (RA) has announced that rehabilitation works on the damaged section of the M1 in Kabula, Blantyre will start this weekend.
The section, rehabilitated after it suffered damage during Cyclone Freddy in March 2023, developed gaping holes on the surface, thereby posing a potential risk of accident.

RA board chairperson Matilda Matabwa said in an interview on Wednesday that the board has already identified a contractor to carry out the works.
“The works have already been handed over to Atroad Civil Engineering and [he] has committed to commence works over the coming weekend,” she said.
Meanwhile, residents and road users have welcomed the development, with an appeal for good workmanship and completion of the project within the set deadline.
One of the residents, Victoria Saopa, said she was pleased to learn that rehabilitation works will start soon.
“I am pleased that the Roads Authority is ready to fix the road. It has been scary seeing the damage worsening by the day,” she said.
A minibus driver Trevor Nyangu said he hopes for good work this time around because the section was damaged two years ago following Cyclone Freddy-induced rains.
“I just hope they will do a good job. We have been waiting for too long,” he said Nyangu.
The road’s poor condition is a death trap as motorists currently use one lane to avoid the potholes, making it dangerous driving at night
