National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust has launched a campaign to fight sexual gender-based violence (SGBV) in Machinga.

Speaking on Tuesday during a meeting with male champions in the district, Nice Balaka and Machinga districts civic education officer Henry Zechariah said they will intensify awareness campaigns on SGBV in communities.

“We want more people to know about the existence of SGBV so they can fight it,” he said.

Zechariah also said the project seeks to reduce school dropout among girls in the district.

In his remarks, Sub-Traditional Authority Mizinga said he will encourage his fellow leaders to abolish harmful cultural practices that fuel SGBV.

“We will also formulate by-laws to protect girls. Any parent who will marry off children will be fined,” he said.

With funding from UN-Women through the Spot Light Initiative, Nice is running a Violence Against Women and Girls Project in the district.
