Financial services group Nico Holdings Limited has given K1 million to the Malawi Council for the Handicapped (Macoha) at Bangwe factory, as part of their corporate social responsibility.

The group’s corporate affairs manager, Mbumba Mlia, said a visit to the factory a few weeks ago was what inspired the company to make the donation.

“A few weeks ago, we were invited and we came to appreciate what our friends at Macoha do. We were conducted on a tour of the factory and we were touched with what these people living with disabilities have been able to achieve,” she said on Monday.

Mlia said as a way of giving back to the community, they decided to give them K1 million to help the institution buy some of the equipment they lack to revamp the once vibrant factory.

Macoha executive director Alick Chavuta thanked Nico Holdings for the generous gift and said the money would be used to solve one of the factory’s problems.

“We are experiencing a lot of challenges. The machinery which we have here is outdated and there is need to replace it and that needs a lot of resources.

“We are happy to say that the money Nico Holdings has given us today will be used to buy a dye pot which the factory needs,” he said.

He also appealed to other well-wishers to assist Macoha by helping them procure some updated equipment which is critical in the making of their products.
