Karonga District Council has warned prospective contractors for the 23 projects under the Reformed K5 billion Constituency Development Fund (CDF) in the district against erecting substandard structures.
The council’s chairperson Atusaye Mwenifumbo expressed the sentiments on Monday during the opening of bids for the 2026 projects under CDF which the district’s Internal Procurement and Disposal Committee conducted.
He said: “We are tired of substandard structures in the district.
“Therefore, the council will not hesitate to reprimand those who give us raw deals. Contractors should own projects and come up with durable and high quality structures.”
The development comes days after the Local Authority Performance Assessment (Lapa) report ranked Karonga District Council on position 26 for the second consecutive year.
In an interview, Karonga district commissioner Willard Mwambo said the open bids exercise signifies the council’s commitment to promoting fairness, building trust and upholding transparency and accountability.
“These are projects that will improve service delivery in areas such as education, agriculture, health, water and infrastructure. Therefore, contractors should deliver timely services and within the budget lines,” he said.
Karonga District Business Community representative Gift Pina Mwambinga commended the council for the transparent process.
Among others, the council seeks contractors to rehabilitate the Songwe Border-Ngana Road, construct Kakolya and Mwakamogho bridges, operation theatre at Kaporo Rural Hospital and an outpatient department at Kasano Health Centre.
