 Nomads back on top

Mighty Mukuru Wanderers yesterday reclaimed the top position in TNM Super League after a 2-0 victory over rookies Bangwe All Stars at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

Striker Christopher Kumwembe and right back Stanley Sanudi were on target.

But the victory was not without sweat as the newly-promoted outfit gave the Nomads a run for their money.

It was goalless at half-time with the hosts having managed only two shots  on target, which were easily tamed by Bangwe All Stars goalkeeper Ellias Missi.

The rookies, on the other hand, had one shot on target which Wanderers goalkeeper William Thole saved.

The goal finally came in the 58th minute when Gaddie Chirwa’s excellent sprint from deep in the midfield, enabled him to lay the ball for Kumwembe to tap home at close range.

The Nomads then doubled the lead in the 62nd minute after defender Talandira Chigaula fouled Sanudi in the box and the right back took the resultant spot kick, sending Missi the wrong way.

The Nomads coach Mark Harrison in post-match interview said he was glad to collect maximum points.

He said: “We needed to get back to winning ways. The good thing is we kept a clean sheet as well.

“We have only conceded two goals this season, all from penalties. So, no goals from open play which is pleasing.”

Bangwe coach Mabvuto Lungu blamed the loss on the players’ loss of concentration in crucial moments.

He said: “It’s a game we wanted to win. We managed to hold them in the first-half.

“We had another plan in the second-half. It’s just one of those moments when the players blinked and we ended up conceding those two goals.

“Nevertheless, I am happy with the play. It’s a process and I am sure we will get there.”

Wanderers lead the table with 14 points from six matches while defending champions FCB Nyasa Bullets, who face Civil Service today, are second with 13 points from five matches.

Silver Strikers, who play Dedza Dynamos Salima Sugar at Dedza Stadium this afternoon are third with 10 points from four matches.

In other matches played yesterday, Blue Eagles and Kamuzu Barracks drew one-all at Nankhaka in Lilongwe.

Ekwendeni Hammers defeated Chitipa United 1-0 while Extreme FC held Karonga United to a goalless draw at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe
