Nomads go 3 points clear

Mighty Wanderers fans in the open stands cheered and danced in the rain after their team went top of the TNM Super League yesterday.

The Nomadsdeposed their arch-rivals FCB Nyasa Bullets following a deserved 2-0 win over their otherwise bogey side Karonga United to go three points clear.

The Lali Lubani Road side took advantage of the People’s Team’s slip the previous day, when they went down by a similar margin to Moyale Barracks at Mzuzu Stadium.

The Nomads now have 62 points with three games left as they seek to end their eight-year flagship league title drought.

Breathing down their necks are Bullets with 59 points from the same number of games while reigning champions Silver Strikers are third with 56 points, but with a game in hand. Karonga United have maintained sixth-place with 40 points from 27 games.

The match was played in wet conditions for the better part of the second half, which forced the teams to switch to a dour kick-and-rush game.

Revitalised forward Promise Kamwendo put the Nomads in the lead in the 10th minute when he connected home a perfectly weighed pass from Isaac Kaliyati.

Then bustling winger Gaddie Chirwa sealed Wanderers’ victory in the 29th minute with a shot from outside the penalty box and three vital points were in the bag.

Ingwina ya Karonga coach Oscar Kaunda said his charges had a slow start to the game.

He said: “We were more organised in the second half, but the rains affected our rhythm.

“It wasn’t just our day and we congratulate Wanderers for the win.”

On the other hand, his Nomads counterpart Bob Mpinganjira said they will keep fighting to the very end.

“The rains affected the flow of the game, I am sure it could have been better, but all the same I thank the boys for their fighting spirit.

“There are still three more games to play and we have to remain focussed.”
