Mighty Wanderers players will share half [K4 million] of the K8 million [$20 000] Standard Bank Knockout Trophy winner’s purse.

Their general secretary David Kanyenda also said the players are bound to get more as chairperson of the club’s board of trustees Rashid Gaffar, his deputy James Chuma, honorary member Aslam Gaffar, club chairperson George Chamangwana and Kanyenda himself, made pledges prior to the final.

“There are a number of people who have made pledges to reward the boys for a job well done,” said Kanyenda.

Wanderers have not only become the first team to defend the Standard Bank Knockout Trophy but have also done it in spectacular fashion by being the first team to win it without conceding a goal.

They have also become the first team to win it three times. They were the first winners when it was introduced as FAM Cup in 2005, when they beat Admarc [now Azam] Tigers in post-match penalties.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) competitions officer Gomezgani Zakazaka confirmed that Nomads’ 2-0 margin wins over Red Lions and Kamuzu Barracks, culminating in their 1-0 win over Silver Strikers in the finals was a record.

“Unless some facts were overlooked, Wanderers have become the first team to win the tournament without conceding a goal. It is a rare achievement as they could be the only or one of the few teams to have won a cup without letting in a goal,” said Zakazaka.

However, he said the achievement is a result of the few games that they played to win the silverware.

Kanyenda said the triumph will bring peace at the Lali Lubani Road.

“It will definitely breathe a new lease of life after a miserable spell.

“It is also unique in that we have brought pride to the Southern Region as the other cups [Presidential and Carlsberg] were won by teams from the Central Region. We are also the only civilian team that has won silverware so far this season. So, it symbolises the depth of quality that we have,” he said.

Kanyenda has since disclosed that they are after Silver marksman Green Harawa’s signature.

“He is the only player from the Silver camp who deserves to play for Wanderers and mark my words, I am going to bring him to Lali Lubani Road,” he said.
