 Nomads wander to second place

Mighty Mukuru Wanderers yesterday moved up to second place in the TNM Super League after a hard fought 1-0 win over Karonga United at the Kamuzu Stadium.

Clement Nyondo scored the only goal of the match in the 12th minute.

Wanderers now have 12 points just a one point behind leaders Silver Strikers who play today against Creck Sporting in Area 47.

Nyondo beat goalkeeper Maclean Mwale to score

The result was not a true reflection of the match as Wanderers dominated, but were let down by poor finishing.

A notable chance was when Christopher Kumwembe wasted a chance inside the penalty box when his hard shot was saved by goalkeeper Mclean Mwale.

Wandarers assistant coach Meke Mwase said it was important to get the three points.

“We are delighted to have won. We had a good game and created lots of chances but unfortunately we couldn’t score more goals. This has been a challenge in all the six games we have played,” he said.

Kamuzu Barracks are third on 11 points

Wanderers rivals FCB Nyasa Big Bullets salvaged a point in Dwangwa against a resilient Mafco FC to stay fourth with 10 points

Mafco took the lead in the 14th minute through Innocent Makawano strike. But Bullets equalised in the 87th minute to deny the Malawi Defence Force-sponsored team a victory.

Just like in their last game Patrick Mwaungulu came to the rescue from a set piece just outside the 18 yard box. It was a relief to the red and white clad fans.

Coach Kallisto Pasuwa said the slow start to the game contributing to the poor result.

He said: “It was a game which we started slow and we didn’t have enough numbers in the box in terms of attack. We were also too hesitant on the ball.

“In the second half, we were better with runs behind the ball, runs behind defence. We had so many chances unfortunately we couldn’t wrap up a win.”

In other matches played yesterday, Moyale drew 1-1 against Chitipa United in Mzuzu.

At Civo Stadium Civil Service drew 1-1 against Bangwe All Stars. Fomo and Baka City also shared points after drawing 1-1
