North traffic office in whistle stop road safety campaigns

In a bid to reduce road accidents in the country, Northern Region Road Transport and Safety Services office has embarked on whistle-stop road safety awareness campaigns.

Speaking at one of the shows in Mzuzu on Saturday, Northern Region principal road transport officer for safety management Joseph Chisamba said the region continues to lose many people through road accidents; hence, the need to educate the masses on prevention.

He reminded people to refrain from selling merchandise along the M1.

“Accidents continue to claim the lives of many people in the region.We, as an office, thought that whistle-stops are one of the effective ways to sensitise communities. People continue to sell products along the roads, which is dangerous,” said Chisamba.

He also advised road users to go to driving schools if they want to drive rather that use short cuts.

Northern Region Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya said 2 386 fatal road accidents were reported last year in the region.

According to government statistics, about 900 lives are lost annually on the country’s roads.

The campaigns are being conducted in collaboration with Northern Region Police Department and driving schools.
