Police have charged Malawi Congress Party (MCP) executive member Ulemu Msungama with sedition.

Msungama was, however, released on bail on Monday.

National Police spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa said the police arrested Msungama because he was involved in actions which could bring down government.

“He [Msungama] has been charged with sedition following remarks he made on a WhatsApp group. We have not picked him up because of his political affiliation, his religion or his profession. We have arrested him because he was involved in actions which could bring down a government in power,” Gondwa said.

There was a show of solidarity between opposition political parties yesterday when People’s Party (PP) and MCP leaders descended on Kanengo Police Station to demand Msungama’s release.

PP acting president Uladi Mussa, accompanied by the party’s secretary general Ibrahim Matola, were warmly welcomed by MCP members present at the gates to the police station.

MCP supporters, clad in Malawi Young Pioneers uniform and cloth, gathered at Kanengo Police Station until Msungama was whisked away to Area 30 Police Headquarters for interrogation.

Later, chaos ensued when PP and MCP supporters blocked the M1 Road at the Police Headquarters with tree trunks and branches, making it difficult for vehicles to pass with ease.

After Msungama was released, he was wrapped with an MCP cloth and ushered into a waiting pick-up for a convoy ride to the MCP headquarters where he addressed supporters and recounted his ordeal. n
